How do I get a gastroscopy or colonoscopy?
You can print out a referral form by clicking on "Referral Form" link under the Forms tab above. Have your family doctor fill out the form and fax it to 905-823-9780.
What if I’m having both procedures done (Colonoscopy and Gastrocscopy), which preparation should I follow?
Follow the preparation instructions for Colonoscopy.
What are CLEAR FLUIDS?
Water, clear broth, clear juice, Gatorade, popsicles, jello (not red/purple colored), coffee or tea without milk or cream.
I’m feeling sick, should I cancel?
The only reason to cancel is if you have respiratory symptoms such as coughing with thick green or yellow sputum, and/or fever. Mild coughs and colds do not require canceling your procedure.
I’m wondering about some of my medications, should I take them or not?
Some require consistent modification such as those for Diabetes and pills for high blood pressure, blood thinners (like Plavix or Coumadin) and aspirin. If your medication isn’t mentioned, then you can take it normally, with tiny sips of water. For further information go to the forms section of this site and click on Medication Queries.
How long does the procedure take? When should my ride pick me up?
Colonoscopy takes about 30 minutes, and require between 30 to 60 minutes for recovery. With the other stages included, have your ride return 60 to 90 minutes (average waiting time) after dropping you off at the clinic. It is a good idea to contact your friend in case of unforeseen delays.
Why should there be another adult person accompanying me to get home after the procedure is done?
You will be given drugs for sedation to help ease the pain and discomfort of the procedure. These sedatives can cause drowsiness and can affect your reflexes, thus it is safer for you to be accompanied/driven home by another responsible adult person.
Why must I follow carefully the instructions for the procedure preparation?
Following the preparation instructions is very important as the colon must be cleaned out thoroughly and completely. A partially – cleaned colon doesn’t provide good visualization of the area and there is a possibility of missing significant findings. Without a good preparation it may not be possible to do the procedure or do it partially and there is a higher likelihood of missing something important.
Why am I instructed to stop eating foods with nuts or seeds several days prior to my procedure?
3 days prior to your procedure, you should stop eating any foods that contain nuts and seeds as they are not easily digested and can clog the scopes.
