Without a proper bowel preparation, important findings such as polyps and tumors can be missed. So please do not compromise the preparation and follow all the instructions carefully. Good preparation ensures good visualization of the bowel. The value of the procedure is only as good as your bowel preparation.

Cancellation Policy…

If cancelling (preferably 4 business days before the procedure date)-please call us from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday to Friday and take note of our cancellation policy/fee as stated below.

Cancellation with less than 4 day notice will result to a charge of $200.00. (Subject to change without notice)

Note: The Cancellation fee is in accordance with the Guidelines for Uninsured Services as expressed by the Canada Health Act.

Preparation Instructions: COLONOSCOPY

  • Preventing Dehydration: DRINK large amounts of clear fluids to prevent dehydration. You may also take fluid replacements like Gatorade G2 or similar substitutes.
  • Clear Fluids are Water, clear broth, clear juice, Gatorade, popsicles, jello (not red/purple colored), coffee or tea without milk or cream.
  • STOP DRINKING ANY FLUIDS 4 HOURS BEFORE YOUR PROCEDURE TIME
  • Klean Prep and Dulcolax are over the counter medication can get it from any pharmacy. No Prescription required.

IF YOUR COLONOSCOPY IS BOOKED BEFORE 12 NOON THE DAY BEFORE THE COLONOSCOPY:

  1. Eat a regular breakfast before 8 am, and take 2 Dulcolax tab with your breakfast.
  2. After breakfast, and until the procedure is finished, YOU MUST REMAIN ON A DIET OF CLEAR FLUIDS, such as: clear soups, broth, pop, Kool-aid, Popsicles, fruit juices (no pulp), Jello, tea or coffee (no cream, no milk). Note: No red and purple coloured fluid please.
  3. At 1:00 p.m.: Start to drink the Klean-PrepTM solution. Dissolve the contents of one sachet in 1000 ml (one litre) of cold water (or Gatorade G2 or Diet Ginger Ale). Drink 250 ml of this solution every 15 minutes. Repeat above procedure with second sachet at 3 p.m. and third at 5 p.m.
  4. About one hour after you begin to drink the Klean-PrepTM you will start to experience a diarrhea-type of bowel movement.
  5. Take the fourth sachet at 9 p.m.

THE DAY OF YOUR COLONOSCOPY:

  1. Report to the Clinic at the assigned time and place.
  2. While waiting for your procedure at the clinic, please bring some reading material.
  3. Arrange to have someone drive you home after the colonoscopy as you will receive sedating/calming medication prior to the procedure.

IF YOUR COLONOSCOPY IS BOOKED FOR 12 NOON & AFTER

THE DAY BEFORE THE COLONOSCOPY:

Preparation Instructions: GASTROSCOPY

  • 8 HOURS BEFORE THE PROCEDURE TIME..... DO NOT EAT SOLIDS
  • 4 HOURS BEFORE THE PROCEDURE TIME….. NOTHING BY MOUTH

Preparation Instructions: HEMORRHOID TREATMENT & FLEXIBLE SIGMOIDOSCOPY

  1. On the night before the procedure day………. 1 Fleet Enema 2 hours after dinner.
  2. On the procedure day………………. 1 Fleet Enema 4 hours before procedure.

Note:

  • Fleet Enema is available over- the- counter at any drug store.
  • Fleet Enema is administered through the anus.
  • Fleet Enema's action necessitates access to washroom.

Preparation Instructions: COLONOSCOPY and GASTROSCOPY

If you are having both procedures done on the same date- please follow the preparation instructions for Colonoscopy.

PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS

  • Bring all your medications with you.
  • Take a complete day off for the procedure.
  • Give yourself extra time as delays are unavoidable. Bring a book to read while waiting.
  • Wear loose comfortable clothing.
  • Bring your OHIP health card to the clinic on every visit. Failure to present it, will lead to denial of any medical services.
  • Have a responsible adult to drive you home after the procedure. You will be given drugs for sedation to help ease the pain and discomfort of the procedure. These sedatives can cause drowsiness and can affect your reflexes, thus it is safer for you to be accompanied/driven home by another responsible adult person.

MEDICATION INSTRUCTION

  • Coumadin/Plavix/Ticlid/Aspirin (ASA)
  • These medications MUST be STOPPED 5 days before the procedure
  • Check with your Family Doctor if it is alright for you to do so, and if not, please call us.
  • Diabetic Medications (oral tablets or injection
  • Take 1/2 the usual dose on the day of bowel preparation.
  • Do NOT take any on the day of your appointment until after the procedure.
  • Check Blood Sugar Level and get the reading on the day of the procedure.
  • Do not take iron medication
  • 2 days before the procedure
  • High Blood Pressure Pills
  • Do NOT take on the day of procedure.
  • If you need antibiotic Prophylaxis for any reason
  • Ask your Family Doctor for a prescription and take it an hour before the procedure with a little sip of water.
  • Suggestions:
  • AMOXICILLIN 2 gms OR
  • CLARITHROMYCIN 500 mg
  • On completion of procedure
  • resume all medications as per schedule, unless instructed otherwise after the procedure.
  • If your medication isn't mentioned
  • then you can take it normally, with tiny sips of water.
  • REMINDER: BRING ALL YOUR MEDICATIONS WITH YOU

CANCELLATION

The only reason to cancel is if you have respiratory symptoms such as coughing with thick green or yellow sputum, and/or fever. Mild coughs and colds do not require canceling your procedure.

HOW LONG DOES THE PROCEDURE TAKE

Colonoscopy takes about 30 minutes, and require between 30 to 60 minutes for recovery. With the other stages included, have your ride return 60 to 90 minutes (average waiting time) after dropping you off at the clinic. It is a good idea to contact your friend in case of unforeseen delays.

STOP EATING FOODS WITH NUTS OR SEEDS

3 days prior to your procedure, you should stop eating any foods that contain nuts and seeds as they are not easily digested and can clog the scopes.
